"Oregon Standoff" Reflection

Write a two paragraph reflection on the Oregon Rancher Standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

In the first paragraph, describe what you know about the standoff, why it is happening, and what is being done.  Include any questions that you can't find an answer to (hint: try googling your questions first - perhaps there is an answer out there?!?)

In the second paragraph, describe what you think about the standoff.  What do you think they should do? How do you think we (or the government) can make that happen? Who do you think is being hurt by this standoff? What do you think it is doing to the Refuge? To the ranchers? To the taxpayers?

Food, Inc - "Fast Food to All Food" Reflection

Think about what you saw in today's video.  Write a reflection about the how our food is raised and treated.  Think mostly about the repercussions of the CHANGE in the way food is currently produced:
  • If animals should have certain rights, do you think those rights also apply to animals we raise for food, like chickens or pigs? Are there any rights that these farm animals should have? If so, what are they?
  • Richard Lobb of the National Chicken Council says in the film, “In a way, we’re not producing chickens, we’re producing food.” What does this statement mean? Do you agree or disagree with it? How might this perspective affect the way that chickens are raised?
  • If we are in consensus that even food animals deserve to have a certain quality of life, who has the responsibility to oversee the treatment of chickens or other food animals? What responsibility do individuals and consumers have? The government? Companies?
  • Think about the cost of food - how would a change in the way we treat animals change the price of what you have for dinner?  Would you still be able to afford chicken? How would this change effect your life?

Food, Inc - "The Supermarket Veil" Reflection

Think about what you saw in today's videos (There were two chapters today!).  Write a reflection about how foods are now engineered and how things should be labeled. In your reflection, you touch upon some of the following ideas:

  • What might be the consequences—both positive and negative—of the company owning the genetic information in the seed?
  • How does this situation compare to downloading music from “free” sites?
  • Seed cleaning is a tradition among farmers.  Think of a tradition that has been in your family for a long time. What if you could no longer have this tradition because someone now legally claims it as theirs?
  • What might be more effective than warning labels for food?
  • People who have been in the industry are knowledgeable about that industry. What are the pros and cons of them becoming regulators working for the government?
